Improve your mindset with one phrase [Video]

When you look at your day, are you filled with a sense of dread over all the things you have to do?

In this quick Virtual Coaching Tip, Executive Coach Todd Mosetter shares one simple phrase you can start using immediately to improve your mindset and get everything on your list done.

Hi everyone. My name is Todd Mosetter. I’m a Vice President and Executive Coach here at Building Champions.

Today, I want to talk about the difference between “have to” and “get to.” For me personally, when I find myself under some stress, maybe with a little bit of negative thinking, I let that phrase “have to” creep in.

A quick example, last night, as I was heading to bed, I was looking at my schedule for the next day and thinking about what I had to do. And I caught myself saying “I have to get up early to work out.”

Well, when I think about the “have to,” I’m seeing things more as obligations rather than opportunities. So, a simple shift that I try and make is to use that phrase “have to” a lot less, and instead, focus on the “get tos.”

It allows me to pause and think through the things I “get to” do.

With everything, there’s opportunity and learning to be had. But if I think of it with a “have to,” I tend to go into it a bit negative—again, like an obligation.

That simple shift to “get to” helps me reframe it a bit. I have a better attitude when I’m heading into it. I see the opportunity and possibility in what’s ahead.

So, if you find yourself like me, sometimes struggling with that “have to” phrase, I’d encourage you to work to replace it with the “get to.” Because our mindset really affects how we show up, how we engage others, and the results we get.

And by focusing on the goodness and the “get tos,” we’re going to be in a better position to win than if we think about the negative and the “have tos.”

So, do your best to make that simple shift and focus on the things you “get to” do rather than seeing them as things you “have to” do.
